How to write an effective resume

Your resume is the key to helping you get the job you want. How you write it can spell the difference between scoring a job interview and getting skipped over for the next candidate.

One of the easiest and most traditional—but effective—ways of writing a resume is by listing down your academic and work experiences chronologically.

Here’s how:

1) Create a Header

The header of your resume should include your name and contact details such as phone number, email address, and home address.

If you plan to post your application online, you can leave out all of the details of your home address (i.e. floor number, house number, street, etc.). However, indicating the city or region (if applicable) you are in will allow the employer to see whether there are opportunities near your location that they can offer.

2) List Your Experience or Skills

Start with your most recent or current job, and then list your previous work experiences.

You should clearly state where you have worked, and what was/were your position/s held and when. State specific accomplishments for each position or job.

Remember to be selective about other info you wish to include, as you can run over a page with too much information. Keep your resume concise by putting only what you want your potential employer to know about you. Include skills and experiences that are most relevant to the position you seek.

3) List Your Education

List the schools you’ve attended starting with the most recent one. Do not forget to include details of your achievement, such as class ranking or special awards.

4) List Any Awards You’ve Won and When You Won Them

Besides your awards in school, let your potential employer know about the recognition you’ve received as a professional. If you have not received any yet, do not worry and just skip this over.

5) List Your Personal Interests

Show your employer how well-rounded you are by sharing hobbies that have helped you grow as a person. Examples are hosting, volunteering, carpentry, reading, or basketball.

This step is considered optional and you may leave it off should you feel like it.

Save your resume as a PDF (Portable Document Form). This format ensures that no portion of your resume can be edited and it will be presented as you want it to be presented. Most employers prefer to receive resumes in PDF as well.

Lastly, using your name as the file name of your resume makes it easier for company recruiters who receive your resume to search for your application when they need to. Including a job-specific keyword in the resume can also help. Example: Juan De La Cruz - Marketing

Digital is the way to go now. Submitting your resume through your potential employer’s website or though its official recruitment email addresses is one of the fastest ways to have your resume received and reviewed.
